The Picture House will hold an Opening Reception on Friday, June 4, from 4 pm to 7 pm for its new exhibit, "Figures and Portraits." The exhibit will feature works by its staff artists, David and Kathie Beale and Emily Gibbons. The exhibit will include works in oil, watercolor and photography. David, Kathie and Emily welcome commissions and will have special rates on commission arrangements made through the month of June. The picture House is located at 85 Homer Ave in Cortland. David, who began painting in watercolor 15 years ago, has completed numerous commissions in the medium through the years, especially of children, and periodically teaches portraiture. An online gallery of his commission work can be seen at www.davidbealeartist.com. Under the guidance of staff member Emily Gibbons, he has also recently begun to paint in oils. His wife and co-owner Kathie teaches art in the Lafayette School District and has worked in many media including stained glass, batik, and more recently photography and mixed media using her original photographs, and encaustic, a medium involving wax. Emily, who plays an important role in managing the Picture House, has a degree in art from SUNY Geneseo, and has formal training in oil, photography and watercolor.
The exhibit will include David's large portraits of his wife Kathie, a self portrait, and a honeymoon portrait of him and Kathie. Photographs by Kathie of her granddaughter Sabine and others will be displayed. Emily 's works will include figure paintings in oil and a recent watercolor portrait of her sister Hannah. The exhibit will feature a pair of recent works painted on premises at The Picture House that David and Emily are painting of each other.
The Picture House, with its tag line of "The House of Good Listeners," has as a top priority getting a feel for what the customer desires. The staff works under the premise that custom framing, archival printing, painting restoration, and the sale of original art work, all services provided by The Picture House, should provide an enjoyable and meaningful experience for the individual client. The approach to commission painting involves getting to meet and know the subject, if possible or appropriate, and understanding the emotional import of the project to the customer.
